Nigerian-born saxophonist Shola Emmanuel interprets jazz in the African style, creatively fashioning music that feeds off traditional African rhythm while maintaining western voice, class and style.
Shola's new album, Kind of Music, reflects his lifelong influences in music, culture, and Gospel. Michael Rand described the album's latest single "Ododo", as "a caffeinated jazz sound swirling with angelic voices, smooth saxophone, pristine piano and flavorful percussion." Mindy McCall said, "Jazz has never sounded so passionate."
Shola's quintet for this concert includes jazz veterans Phil Adair on piano and vocals, Yakou Daniel on drums, percussion, and vocals, and Tosinger with vocals and percussion.
Shola has performed in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Africa with some of the most respected performers in professional music. The soulful rhythm of his blend of African highlife and American swing jazz connects with both jazz connoisseurs and those new to the genre.
